The happiest and most frequent reason your employees take a leave of absence is the arrival of a new family member. Maybe it’s Dad who stays home with the baby. Maybe it’s Mom. Whoever takes on the full-time new parenting role is going to have a great time—and be away from work long enough for the work environment to change and evolve. In some parts of the world—here in the Czech Republic, for instance, that’s usually two years. In other countries, parental leave may be as short as three months. While individual needs and experiences may and do vary, the fact remains that the new parent who’s been changing diapers and singing lullabies for months or even years is going to have some catching up to do when s/he comes back to work.

To adopt new HR software or not to adopt new HR software? That is the question. Is it nobler to keep on struggling with sluggish and expensive processes or take a chance on something that promises to work better?

Whoever first said “A penny saved is a penny earned” obviously didn’t work in HR. Anyone whose job it is to find, sign, train and keep qualified employees knows that “penny-wise, pound-foolish” is the more appropriate aphorism.

The candidate who got the job is feeling pretty good—successful, desirable, ready to go. The paperwork’s signed. They’re in the system. But that doesn't mean they’re in the loop. Getting the job can seem trivial in comparison with actually being able to do it. What HR calls onboarding covers orientation—to the company, to the position and to the team. It covers training—how things are done here, using what processes and which tools and what software applications, not to mention mastering the duties specific to the job itself. With so many tasks to juggle, it can feel like trying to make a soufflé in a wind tunnel!

Whether the employees you want to attract and keep are executives or delivery drivers, today’s human resources efforts too often feel like a catch them if you can exercise. You can blame the global pandemic for that! When your home is your office and your office is your home, when all your interactions are virtual, loyalty to a virtual employer can be virtually non-existent. And candidates are fickle. While fishing for jobs can seem like sport, actually joining a new company’s labor pool is so often confusing and disheartening—especially if they are doing it from a distance. If too many new hires take the bait and then spit out the hook, it’s time to find a new way of bringing them onboard.
